On a recent visit to Michi-no-Eki Hota Elementary School, I found a large souvenir shop filled with distinctive Chiba products and many original items inspired by the former school.
This review introduces Peanut Senbei, a classic Chiba-style snack presented in a package unique to Hota Elementary School.
Peanut Senbei (Ishiwata Confectionery)
The box contains 16 crackers and costs 648 yen.
The wrapping resembles a school attendance certificate, complete with a playful principal named Kyonan Kinjiro. The souvenir shop has many charming school-themed packages like this.
The best-before date is printed on the back and was about three months from purchase. The package also shows an old photograph of Hota Elementary School.
The school remained in use until 2014, which is surprisingly recent.
Under the decorative wrapping is a simple box.
The individual silver wrappers are much more understated than the humorous outer package.
How does Peanut Senbei taste?
Each cracker is thin, about 6 cm across, and pleasantly crisp. Its gentle sweetness places it somewhere between a cookie and a senbei, while the peanut pieces add a nice texture.
I wished there were a few more peanuts, but the flavor is very good. The memorable package makes it a fun and uncommon gift from Hota Elementary School.
For a heartier peanut cracker, look for a product called Mameshibori, which contains a more generous amount of peanuts.
