Milk Senbei (Ishiwata Confectionery): Irresistibly Crisp with a Rich, Milky Flavor

牛乳せんべいパッケージ

After traveling around southern Boso, I discovered just how delicious the local milk is.

I still regret not buying a bottle of milk itself, but I was also surprised by the high quality of the souvenirs made with it.

I bought the Milk Senbei featured here at Michi-no-Eki Miyoshimura Hina-no-Sato. It was prominently recommended in the shop, and the combination of milk and senbei was simply too intriguing to pass up.

Although it felt a little less like traditional senbei than I expected, I really enjoyed it as a sweet snack and wanted to share my review.

Milk Senbei (Ishiwata Confectionery)

Milk Senbei package

A box contains 25 crackers and costs 540 yen.

The cow-patterned package is cute and comes in a cylindrical box.
It feels surprisingly light for its size.

Top of the Milk Senbei package

I was very curious whether Milk Senbei would taste sweet or salty.

Bottom of the Milk Senbei package

Since salt is not listed among the ingredients, it seems to be a sweet snack.

The best-before date is printed on the bottom. Mine was about five months from the purchase date.

Milk Senbei packets inside the box

There were five individual packets inside the box.

Each packet also features a cow design.

Each packet contained five thin crackers, each about 9 cm in diameter.

What does Milk Senbei taste like?

The surface is so smooth and glossy that it almost shines.

Let’s give it a try.

Cross-section of Milk Senbei

The texture is crisp and crunchy, with a very satisfying bite.

It may look a little like a gaufrette wafer, but the flavor is completely different.

The plain appearance did not raise my expectations, but the milk flavor is remarkably rich. It surprised me in the best possible way.

The sweetness is just right. It tastes light and refreshing while still delivering plenty of creamy richness, followed by a gentle condensed-milk-like sweetness.

Before I knew it, I had finished an entire packet. The thin crackers are easy to eat, and even my two-year-old enjoyed them.
Because they are thin-baked crackers, they also seem lighter than cookies and make a great snack for children.
I loved the flavor as an adult, too.
The milk flavor is captured extremely well, so anyone who dislikes milk may want to choose something else.

This is a recommended souvenir from southern Boso. Thank you for the treat!
