While traveling around Chiba Prefecture, I discovered that the area describes itself as the birthplace of dairy farming in Japan.
Looking into the basis for that claim, I learned that it comes from the history of Tokugawa Yoshimune producing dairy products there for the first time.
With such a long connection to dairying, Chiba naturally offers many dairy-based souvenirs, and the number seems to increase as you travel toward Minamiboso.
This time, I bought Cheese Manju at Noro Parking Area (Inbound), roughly in the center of the Boso Peninsula.
As an aside, Noro PA had an excellent product selection and is a particularly good place to look for souvenirs that feel genuinely connected to Chiba.
Nyuchu no Ka Cheese Manju (Sawarabi)
A box of 12 costs ¥648 including tax.
The words “Limited to Minamiboso, Birthplace of Dairy Farming” immediately caught my attention.
The wrapping paper is a gentle cream color with softly drawn illustrations of milk.

The best-before date is printed on the back. The box I purchased had about a month and a half remaining.

Removing the wrapping paper reveals a plain white box.

The individual wrappers, however, are fully printed, which gives the presentation plenty of character.

Twelve pieces are arranged inside.

A cow is printed on each individual package as well, making the sweets suitable for handing out separately.
What did Cheese Manju taste like?

The manju has an exceptionally fine, smooth, and beautiful surface.

Now, let’s eat.
The mouthfeel is extremely moist.
Its petite size means it disappears in about three bites, yet every bite immediately encourages another.
The cheese flavor is rich, and even the outer cake tastes delicious on its own.
Cheese appears to be kneaded into the white bean paste as well, because a clear cheese aroma remains in the finish.
The overall flavor is mellow. There is no unpleasant cheese odor, and the gentle sweetness makes it very easy to eat.
Although it is a manju, it also has the atmosphere of a Western confection, so younger recipients are likely to enjoy it.
A single individually wrapped piece provides a surprisingly satisfying amount, making it a good souvenir to distribute among a group.
It was delicious.
I need to keep trying more dairy products from Minamiboso and continue updating the recommended Chiba souvenir guide.
