Japanese Wakame Soup with Chopped Mekabu by Nanohana no Sato: A Comforting Breakfast Staple

刻み芽かぶスープ

Soups containing seaweed like this are familiar products sold at roadside stations, Fusa no Eki shops, and service areas throughout Chiba.

A hot-water pot and tiny paper cups are often provided for sampling. Even though I already know what the soup tastes like, it is delicious enough that I try it every time.

There are many varieties. They look similar at first glance, but the product names differ slightly and several different companies appear to manufacture them.

This time I will introduce the Japanese-style wakame soup with chopped mekabu that I bought at Umakuta no Sato.

Japanese Wakame Soup with Chopped Mekabu (Nanohana no Sato)

A 90-gram bag cost 540 yen.

Back of the Chopped Mekabu Soup package

The packaging is simplicity itself.
It lists the preparation instructions, ingredients, calories, and other basic information.
The clear bag is packed tightly with dried seaweed.
A resealable zipper is a welcome practical feature.

Chopped Mekabu Soup mix in a bowl

The best-before date is printed on the back. It had about nine months remaining from the purchase date.

At 540 yen for enough mix to make 22 bowls of 150 milliliters each, it feels like good value.

Preparing Japanese Wakame Soup with Chopped Mekabu

Following the instructions, I placed one tablespoon of the soup mix in a bowl.

Chopped Mekabu Soup after adding hot water

Then I poured in hot water. Time to taste it.

The kombu produces a wonderfully savory stock.
The wakame rehydrates in the hot water and develops a smooth, slippery texture.
The crunchy bite of kagome kombu and the natural thickness from the mekabu make it especially delicious.

The way this stock seems to soak gently into the stomach makes it ideal for the morning after drinking. 🙂

My children liked it too and asked me to prepare it every morning.

Sweets are always welcome, but a soup like this—easy to use up naturally at the family table—also makes a thoughtful souvenir.

Thank you for the meal.
