Kirayuki Hokkaido White Chocolate by Donan Foods: Crisp Cacao Nibs with Bitterness and Aroma

きらゆき外箱

When people think of Hokkaido souvenirs, many probably picture sweet chocolate products first. White chocolate and a rich, creamy flavor seem particularly fixed in our minds as part of the Hokkaido image.

If someone says, “Here is a souvenir from Hokkaido,” and gives you something in this category, it is usually a safe bet. Hokkaido has many more famous white-chocolate products, but Kirayuki—the sweet introduced here—also paired beautifully with whisky. As someone who enjoys alcohol, I found it an exceptionally accomplished product.

Like the “Hokkaido Limited Cheddar Cheese Potato” from the previous article, I discovered and bought it at a Hokkaido product fair in Tokyo.

Let us begin the review.

Silver snowflakes decorate a pure white box. The beautiful design evokes winter in Hokkaido.

A box cost 756 yen and contained 21 pieces, weighing 147 grams in total.

The best-before date is printed on the back. The chocolate keeps for about 180 days.

Kirayuki package information about cacao nibs

The white chocolate apparently contains cacao nibs.

Opening the box reveals another glittering silver winter landscape.
Every piece is individually wrapped in a stylish packet printed with a snowflake. 🙂

What Did Kirayuki Hokkaido White Chocolate Taste Like?

Time to try one.

Even the surface of the chocolate is molded into a snowflake pattern.

Cross section of Kirayuki white chocolate

The rich white chocolate melts with remarkable smoothness.
It feels as though it might begin melting from the warmth of your fingers alone.

Hidden inside are small cacao-nib pieces that crack crisply between the back teeth.
At the same moment, the gentle bitterness and wonderful aroma of roasted, coarsely crushed cacao gradually spread across the palate.

The bittersweet cacao nibs contrast beautifully with the sweetness of the white chocolate, creating a more sophisticated, grown-up character.

White chocolate is a standard Hokkaido souvenir, but the clear presence of the cacao nibs makes this product feel fresh and distinctly different from the usual offerings. 🙂

It is naturally suitable as a souvenir, while the elegant packaging could also make it a fine Valentine’s gift for adults.

Thank you for the treat!
