This is peppermint oil made with mint, one of Hokkaido’s best-known agricultural products. At first glance I did not understand what the small bottle was meant for. A shop assistant explained that it could be used in many different ways, which is exactly what makes it such an interesting souvenir.

Its sharp yet sweet mint fragrance can be enjoyed as a personal scent or room fragrance when used appropriately. That same aroma can also help discourage insects during summer. I used the spray type as an insect-repellent fragrance and found it impressively effective.

A very small amount can also create a refreshing feeling in hot weather. Some people add a carefully measured drop to bathwater so that the body feels cool after bathing rather than uncomfortably warm. Peppermint products are also familiar in items intended to soothe the throat.

Because concentrated essential oil is powerful, it should never be used casually in the eyes, directly on sensitive skin, or in excessive amounts. Follow the product label, dilute it when directed, keep it away from children and pets, and stop using it if irritation occurs. The shop’s current guidance should take priority over informal household tips.

With those precautions, peppermint oil has many possible roles and can be useful not only as a travel gift but also as a regular household item. It has been loved for generations, so it feels reassuring whether you give it to someone else or purchase it for yourself.

The one drawback is the price. The spray bottle cost about 1,080 yen when I bought it, which felt slightly expensive for the volume. Prices may have changed, and it is worth comparing shops if you plan to purchase several bottles.

Even so, the compact size, refreshing Hokkaido identity and range of practical uses make Kitami peppermint oil a memorable souvenir—especially for someone who prefers functional gifts to sweets.
