Review of Gotoken Quard
This is a review of Quard, an original Western-style confection from Gotoken, the long-established restaurant in Hakodate. I bought it at Gotoken in Hakodate.
A substantial baked cake filled with walnuts
Quard is a weighty, pie-like baked cake generously filled with walnuts and finished with apricot jam. It is not excessively sweet: the fragrant roasted walnuts and the fruity sweet-tart flavor of apricot are beautifully balanced. Its appearance is simple, but it feels substantial and is very satisfying with coffee or tea. As a gift, it looks and tastes more luxurious than its price suggests, so I often choose it when I need something to bring to someone. Outside Hakodate it is not especially well known, which makes it feel like a hidden local favorite. The texture is somewhat firm, so people with weak teeth may find it difficult to eat. On the other hand, its generous body makes it satisfying even for people with a large appetite. I have only bought it as a whole cake, but it is still reasonably priced. If you are visiting Hakodate, buying a complete Quard as a memorable gift is an excellent choice.
