Gokatteya Yokan is a famous confection of southern Hokkaido made by a long-established shop in Esashi near Hakodate. The sweet is packed inside a thick cylindrical paper container.
Remove the top, push from the bottom, and the yokan rises from the tube. A string attached to the package is used to cut off exactly the amount you want. This unusual method turns eating into a small activity and is especially memorable for a souvenir recipient.
The flavor is elegant and less sweet than many yokan. The bean paste has a somewhat pale color, but the taste is satisfying and refined. Although it originates in Esashi, its reputation is strong enough that it is commonly found at gift counters in Hakodate.
A conventional boxed version exists, but I recommend the tube for a souvenir. Hands remain clean, and there is no need for a plate or kitchen knife. The package controls the portion and makes serving neat and convenient.
It can be carried at room temperature according to the product guidance, and compact packages and single-piece sales make both transport and distribution easy. Confirm current storage and expiration information on the label.
Within southern Hokkaido it is well known, yet outside the region it still feels distinctive. Mild sweetness, portability and the ingenious string-cutting ritual combine to make Gokatteya Yokan an excellent local gift.
