Kameya Octopus Rice Crackers: Are These Famous Chiba Crackers Actually Made with More Squid?

The Boso Peninsula has many excellent specialties, with distinctive products in every area. Around Kamogawa, sea bream rice crackers are famous, but people who receive them repeatedly may welcome something different. I found another recommended cracker from the same maker at Mizunosato Sawara.

Kameya Octopus Rice Crackers

The package shows a humorous octopus beneath a Boso curtain and says “This is delicious!” They have a soy-and-mirin flavor. Kameya is famous for sea bream crackers, so expectations were high (^^) Ten packets of two cost ¥540. The back explains how to distinguish male and female octopuses—knowledge I may never use. Surprisingly, squid appears before octopus in the ingredients (laughs). Are these squid crackers? The best-before period is about 120 days.

My impressions after eating Kameya Octopus Rice Crackers

Though thin, it has a satisfyingly loud crunch. Chewy octopus pieces appear within the sweet-savory seasoning. It dries the mouth slightly, but tea restores perfect balance. A mild spicy finish draws you back and remains gentle enough for children. My elementary-school child happily ate them (^^), so they disappeared before I noticed. Sea bream crackers may be the famous choice, but these octopus crackers are also recommended. Squid may be listed in greater quantity, yet the result still tastes like octopus.
