Peanut Monaka: A Chiba Souvenir That Always Ranks Highly—But Is It Really That Satisfying?

I have bought and tasted many souvenirs from Chiba Prefecture, but until now I had never encountered the Peanut Monaka introduced here.

Travel websites and magazines almost invariably recommend it as one of Chiba’s best souvenirs.

When a product receives that much promotion, does it not make you wonder whether it is genuinely delicious? Moreover, I could not remember seeing it often in souvenir shops around Chiba. Although I intended to buy it, I had been unable to try it.

At last I found a box, so here is my review.

Peanut Monaka by Nagomi Yoneya

Surprisingly, I bought it at Ueno Station in Tokyo. I ultimately discovered this Chiba specialty in the capital before finding it in Chiba itself.

I spotted it at a souvenir shop on the way to the Shinkansen platforms, where the distinctive package immediately stood out.

The box is shaped around the motif of a peanut.

Its unusual height gives it a strong presence. That is a definite advantage when presenting it to someone as a souvenir.

The package explains the Japanese name for peanuts, rakkasei: the flower, or ka, falls, raku, and then produces, sei, the fruit underground. I was skeptical and looked it up, but this does appear to be the accepted origin of the name.

Let us open the box.

Eight sweets are packed vertically inside.

Each one is individually wrapped, with the product name and details printed on the wrapper.

Opening the wrapper reveals the peanut-shaped monaka itself. It felt considerably heavier than its appearance suggested.

I tried breaking it in half to see the cross-section, but it did not split neatly.

After checking the official website later, I realized it would probably have been better to peel it apart from the seam.

Trying the Highly Rated Peanut Monaka for Myself

Now for the tasting.

I put one half in my mouth at once, but even half was large.

The crisp monaka wafer clung to the inside of my mouth and absorbed moisture immediately.

Then the peanut-paste bean filling slowly spread across my palate. As I continued chewing, I discovered actual pieces of peanut mixed into the filling.

I considered taking a photograph of the peanut inside, but the result was not attractive enough to include. I love sweets, yet eating half in one bite felt as though my blood sugar rose instantly!

I divided the remaining half into several bites. The wafer still stuck to my mouth, but eating it slowly made the flavor much easier to appreciate.

After finishing a single piece, I felt remarkably full.
For context, I ate it as my first food of the day at seven in the morning.

I drank iced black coffee between bites, and the pairing worked extremely well.

It was substantial enough to count as breakfast.
I normally eat one thin slice of toast, and this monaka gave me a similar level of satisfaction.

As printed on the back of the wrapper, one piece contains 132 calories. This is purely my impression, but it felt as filling as something with around 250 calories.

With such a strong expression of Chiba’s famous peanuts and this level of satisfaction, the high ratings make sense. Anyone receiving it is very likely to tell you that it was delicious. From the distinctive box to the peanut paste and crisp monaka shell, every part leaves a memorable impression.

I do not enjoy assigning personal rankings, so I will not call it number one, but it is unquestionably a dependable choice.

The broadly appealing flavor also makes it convenient for many different recipients. Of course, some people dislike sweets; in that case, give them plain Chiba peanuts instead.
