A mysterious character on a bright yellow box immediately caught my attention. Impact is one of the important factors when choosing a souvenir.
It helps when you can easily imagine the recipient saying, “What is this?”, “So cute!”, or simply laughing. With an unfamiliar product, you often cannot know the flavor beforehand, so memorable packaging makes the choice easier.
I had seen this product in several places, but bought it at Michi-no-Eki Umakuta no Sato. A 28-gram box cost 864 yen.
Norimaru-kun Chips, Kombu Dashi Flavor

The package promises a crisp bite followed by spreading flavor, while a small window gives a glimpse of the nori inside.

Information about nori’s nutrition and an explanation of stevia are printed on the side.

The best-before period is about six months. The product uses dried nori from Japan.

I love containers like this because they can later hold children’s toys or small household items. 🙂
What Did Norimaru-kun Chips Taste Like?
The box is filled with bite-size pieces of nori.
Because it felt so light, I wondered whether there would be very little inside, but the seaweed reaches all the way to the top.
Time to taste one.

Crisp and crackly! The surface has a slight shine, but because stevia is used instead of sugar, the pieces do not leave your hands sticky.
Then the savory flavor slowly spreads. The sweetness and kombu stock work beautifully together.
Although strongly seasoned, the chips still taste clean and become highly addictive.
One piece follows another, and your hand simply will not stop.
At 864 yen, I had hoped to enjoy the box over several days. Instead, three family members emptied it in a single evening.
The robust seasoning would also pair well with plain white rice.
We enjoyed ours as a snack with drinks.
Japanese nori and plant-derived sweetness also make it feel reassuring for children.
Because it is seaweed, the calories do not feel worrying either, and it can help satisfy snack cravings while dieting. 🙂
After one taste, Norimaru-kun Chips may win almost anyone over.
Thank you for the treat!
