Boshu Hijiki Nori by Takagi Shoten: A Textured Rice Topping Packed with Chiba’s Sea

房州ひじきのり

When people hear “souvenir,” many first imagine a box of sweets. Among close friends or family, however, practical products for everyday meals can be even more welcome.

They may be difficult to bring to a business client, but something served with rice recalls the trip each day it appears on the table.

I bought this Boshu Hijiki Nori at Michi-no-Eki Umakuta no Sato in the Kisarazu area. The shop carried many rice accompaniments, so choosing was difficult, but this one proved an outstanding match for white rice. Its quality also felt clearly different from ordinary supermarket products.

The printed paper on the lid has a stylish traditional design, and even the large character “Bo” looks attractive.

The jars were stacked high at Umakuta no Sato, making me think it must be one of the featured products, so I bought one.

Back of the Boshu Hijiki Nori jar

The hijiki is 100% Chiba-grown.
The susabi nori and aonori used alongside it are also entirely from Chiba.
This truly is a product packed with the sea of Chiba.

The jar contains 150 grams and cost 560 yen.

The best-before date is printed on the back. It had about ten months remaining from the purchase date.

Trying Boshu Hijiki Nori on Rice

Glossy, powerfully black hijiki nori appears inside the jar.

When I tried to pick some up with chopsticks, I was surprised by how firm it was compared with the nori I usually eat.

Can you see it in the photograph? The mixture holds the exact shape made by the chopsticks without sagging.

I placed it on freshly cooked rice and took a bite.

There is plenty of hijiki, giving the topping a pleasantly popping bite.
The surrounding nori is concentrated and richly flavored, while a slightly sweet seasoning lets the natural ingredients shine and matches white rice perfectly.

Because this firm hijiki nori can be lifted neatly with chopsticks, it also works well as a snack with alcohol, especially sake. 🙂

We thoroughly enjoyed this intensely flavored nori made entirely with Chiba ingredients.

Thank you for the meal.
