Michi-no-Eki Furari Tomiyama: A Highway Oasis in Minamiboso

富楽里とみやま外観

The Futtsu-Tateyama Road is the route most travelers use when heading as far south as Minamiboso City in Chiba Prefecture. Near the end of that road stands Highway Oasis Furari / Michi-no-Eki Furari Tomiyama.

Minamiboso has many roadside stations and plenty of places to buy souvenirs, but this is the only service or parking area directly connected to the expressway.

It is also unusual because the roadside station and highway oasis form a single facility that can be entered both from ordinary roads and from the expressway.

Its convenient location is only part of the appeal. The souvenirs and food available there were also excellent.

This is a place I strongly recommend visiting whenever you travel this far into southern Chiba, so here is a detailed review and report.

Because the full name is rather long, I will refer to the entire facility below as Michi-no-Eki Furari Tomiyama.

About Michi-no-Eki Furari Tomiyama

Where is Michi-no-Eki Furari Tomiyama?

The address is 1900 Nibu, Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture.

Even with smooth expressway traffic, the drive from central Tokyo will probably take at least two hours.

Nearby is Mount Nokogiri, one of Chiba’s best-known mountains.

Once you travel this far south, the urban atmosphere around Chiba City has disappeared completely. I find the area ideal for a short getaway.

Features and Important Cautions

The most important feature is that a roadside station and an expressway parking area are integrated into the same facility.

Two points are worth knowing in advance:

  • To park on the roadside-station side, leave the expressway at the preceding interchange.
  • You cannot use Furari Tomiyama itself to exit to local roads or enter the expressway.

When traveling outbound and wishing to use the ground-level parking lot, exit immediately beforehand at Kyonan-Tomiyama IC.

A car navigation system may try to guide you to the expressway side of Furari Tomiyama, causing you to pass the interchange. Before setting out, confirm that the destination marker is on the ground-level parking lot.

Viewed as a roadside station, this is an impressively substantial facility. Viewed as an expressway PA, it offers more than enough shopping and relaxation.

One disappointment is that the individual shops inside close at 6:00 p.m.

We visited at around 2:00 p.m., so I cannot show conditions after closing, but at that time visitors may have access to little more than the toilets.

During operating hours, however, access is convenient and both the parking area and sales floors are spacious and easy to use.

The following sections show our visit in detail.

Souvenirs and Shopping at Michi-no-Eki Furari Tomiyama

We visited at around 2:00 p.m. on a Sunday, when approximately 40 percent of the parking spaces were empty.

On a previous visit, only around 20 percent had been available, so occupancy clearly varies with timing.

The parking lot is large enough that a long queue is unlikely.

Souvenir Shop Report

The facility places shopping on the first floor and dining on the second.

The first floor is broadly divided into three areas: a fresh-fish market directly operated by the fisheries cooperative, a section selling local vegetables and other produce, and a general souvenir shop.

We began with the souvenir area.

In the fresh-fish area, tanks and counters also offer products such as spiny lobster and turban shell.

The fresh vegetable section is also very large.

These are the three souvenirs we actually purchased.

Because this was a day devoted to visiting several roadside stations, we bought slightly less than usual.

I plan to review each product separately.

Food and Local Specialties at Furari Tomiyama

The second floor contains several places to eat.

We had eaten brunch only about two hours earlier, but the atmosphere of this food area persuaded us to have another light meal.

On our previous visit, we bought food from this prepared-food shop, which is extremely popular.

I already knew that the fish-ball soup here was famous, so I ordered a bowl.

We also ordered soy-sauce ramen from Ramen Furari.

Meanwhile, our children ordered ice cream from Kondo Farm, visible farther back in the photograph.

After waiting around three minutes, the fish-ball soup arrived.

The seasoning was lighter than I expected, encouraging you to identify the natural flavors of the ingredients one by one.

Because it was a cold day, the hot broth immediately warmed the body.

On an empty stomach, the soup alone may not be enough, but combining it with several prepared dishes would create a luxurious meal.

Next came the soy-sauce ramen.

Its appearance suggested a simple, old-fashioned shoyu ramen, yet the broth was too rich and complex to describe as merely light.

Besides soy sauce, several other flavors came through clearly. The noodles matched the soup well, producing a respectable local ramen.

For some reason it also included a generous amount of chashu, which made the bowl feel especially good value.

Being able to enjoy food this delicious so quickly is one of the great advantages of a parking area.

On the opposite side of the second floor is a restaurant directly operated by the fisheries cooperative, serving seafood bowls and similar dishes.

Visitors wanting a more substantial meal may prefer this option.

There is plenty of dining space, so unless the facility is exceptionally crowded, visitors should be able to relax.

Nobody was using the terraces during our winter visit, but many outdoor seats are available. On a warm day, the combination of this view and the excellent food should be wonderfully relaxing.

The second floor connects directly to the expressway side.

When we went outside to see that entrance, the sign called the facility Highway Oasis Furari rather than a roadside station.

This side also has plenty of terrace seating.

Approximately 70 percent of the expressway-side parking spaces were occupied.
