Japanese Pear Water by Yamazaki Baking: Refreshing, Juicy Nashi Flavor in Every Sip

Although we see him a little less often these days, Funassyi became one of Chiba’s most famous characters. He is, of course, a pear-themed mascot.

Chiba is Japan’s leading producer of Japanese pears. The prefecture naturally offers many pear-related souvenirs, and I bought this drink when I spotted it. A canned beverage may not be the most conventional souvenir, but it works as a playful gift and, more importantly, it was genuinely delicious. Giving one can to each person at the office would actually feel more luxurious than dividing a box of sweets.

I bought it at Ichihara Service Area (Outbound). Several other regional drinks were available, so take a look if you visit.

Japanese Pear Water (Yamazaki Baking)

I believe it cost around 110 yen for 350 milliliters.

The gold can has an almost majestic appearance.

Its surface has even been given a slightly rough texture resembling the skin of a Japanese pear. That attention to the can itself is impressive—it almost feels like touching the fruit.

The distributor is Yamazaki, the company familiar from its bread products. The best-before date is printed on the bottom of the can.

This Pear Water uses only Japanese pears grown in Chiba Prefecture.
Pear juice made from European pears appears occasionally, but a Japanese nashi drink is rather unusual.

What Did Japanese Pear Water Taste Like?

The flavor is full of the fresh, juicy character of Japanese pear. It is light and smooth, with a clean, refreshing finish—exactly the kind of drink you want to finish in one go on a hot day.

Its natural sweetness also makes it easy for adults to enjoy, and it is extremely tasty.

For just over 100 yen, being able to enjoy this much Chiba-grown Japanese pear feels like excellent value. Fresh pears can be difficult to find out of season, so a product like this is especially welcome.
