likeyou Strawberry Mille-Feuille from Mura no Eki: A Souvenir Sweet as Satisfying as a Fine Pastry

What comes to mind when you think of Western-style sweets that can be stored at room temperature? We have introduced many products on this blog, and most Western-style sweets sold in souvenir shops are designed to keep without refrigeration. That is certainly convenient when you need to carry them home, but it can sometimes leave something to be desired when flavor is the priority. That is simply the nature of many souvenirs. Products bought at souvenir shops and desserts from famous pastry boutiques are not really intended to be compared in the first place. Each has its own advantages, and shoppers understand that when making their choices. However, the “likeyou Strawberry Mille-Feuille” I bought this time was so impressive that I could easily have mistaken it for a refrigerated dessert. I purchased it at the Izu no Heso roadside station, so I would like to introduce it here.

A large poster advertising this strawberry mille-feuille was displayed prominently, and the generous shelf space made it look like a flagship product, so I decided to buy it! A box of five cost ¥756. There was also a larger box of fifteen for ¥2,268. The manufacturer is Poème Honpo Co., Ltd. in Ehime Prefecture. The vivid red box has an unusual shape that resembles a thick hardcover book. The simple photographs of mille-feuille and strawberries on the package also give it a stylish look. Each piece contains 94 kcal. The best-before date is printed on the back; mine was about a month and a half from the purchase date. When you open the lid as though turning the cover of a book, individually wrapped mille-feuille pieces appear inside in bright red wrappers that look like strawberries. The inside of the lid contains an explanation of the strawberry mille-feuille. The surface is caramelized and beautifully glossy.

Let’s try it! The pastry is crisp, flaky, and wonderfully crunchy. This pastry is amazing! The quality of the layers is so high that it is hard to believe I bought it casually at a souvenir shop I happened to visit. The caramelized surface is exceptionally crisp as well. The nuts on top are generously sized and add a pleasant contrast in texture. The strawberry chocolate also has an excellent balance of sweetness and tartness! At first, ¥756 for five pieces felt slightly expensive. Once I tasted one, though, the price made complete sense. For this level of quality, it almost feels inexpensive (^^) It was absolutely delicious. I wish I had bought the larger box. Thank you for the treat!
