Hakata has so much delicious food that choosing a souvenir can be difficult. Tsurunoko, loved for more than a century, is an excellent answer and especially suitable for tea lovers and older recipients.
My Review of Tsurunoko
Seven pieces cost ¥820.
The crane-decorated box resembles an egg lying on its side and creates excitement before opening.
Each piece is wrapped in white or pink washi. Gold flecks on the thin paper create a luxurious feeling.
The enclosed leaflet explains the origin of Tsurunoko. The sweet feels fluffy like marshmallow when touched.
Inside the delicate marshmallow-like shell is rich, mellow egg-yolk bean paste. Although marshmallows suggest Western sweets, this tastes more like refined wagashi. The elegant sweetness and richness pair perfectly with green tea.
Light and Easy to Carry Even with Full Luggage
The first surprise when lifting the box is how light it feels. Despite looking like manju, it is easy to carry home even when your luggage is already full. Two-piece packs start at ¥300, making them useful for yourself or a tasting sample.
Loved by Children and Older People
Children who dislike traditional bean-paste sweets may enjoy the Western marshmallow shell and creamy yolk filling. Older people who avoid hard foods should also appreciate its soft, melt-in-the-mouth texture and nostalgic flavor at tea time.
