Suruga Bay Sakura Shrimp Potato Chips: A Shizuoka Snack Full of Local Flavor

駿河湾桜えびポテトチップスパッケージ

Regional potato chips are one of those souvenirs I am tempted to buy wherever I travel, and once again I gave in.

There was no way I could ignore a collaboration with Suruga Bay sakura shrimp, one of Shizuoka’s best-known specialties.

A bag of chips may feel a little too casual as a gift for someone else, but I recommend it for enjoying at home because the flavor can bring back memories of the trip.

I purchased this bag at the Izu no Heso roadside station in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Suruga Bay Sakura Shrimp Potato Chips (Wakafuji)

One bag costs ¥367, a fairly typical price for regional potato chips.

The bag is larger than an ordinary bag of chips, and it contains a generous 145 g.

Many modern potato-chip bags seem enormous despite being mostly empty inside, so I was pleased that this one felt satisfyingly heavy.

Another positive point is that the chips are made with potatoes grown in Japan.

The package is printed with sakura shrimp and Mount Fuji.

The sight of sakura shrimp being dried across the ground looks like a broad pink carpet.

What did Suruga Bay Sakura Shrimp Potato Chips taste like?

Now, let’s try them.

Sakura shrimp potato chips served on a plate

The chips are pale in color, and every piece is impressively large. The Japanese-grown potatoes certainly look substantial.

As you would expect, the texture is wonderfully crisp.

They also seem less oily than ordinary potato chips, which makes them especially easy to eat.

The elegant sweetness and savory flavor of sakura shrimp spread throughout the mouth.

The seasoning is gently salted, allowing the aroma of the shrimp to stand out more clearly.

They taste even better when you eat them while looking at the photograph of freshly landed sakura shrimp on the package.

Their light, unfussy flavor never becomes tiring and should appeal to almost everyone. They were also extremely popular with my children.

If you want a much more intense sakura-shrimp experience, I recommend Sakura Ebi no Mai below instead. If you cannot choose, you may as well buy both.
