Impossible to Stop: Kochi’s Addictive Millet Biscuits

TOC

What are Millet Biscuits?

I first tried Millet Biscuits after my boss returned from Kochi with a bag. The retro-looking snack seemed ordinary, but one bite changed that impression. A roasted aroma, gentle sweetness, and a distinct salty finish came together so well that it was difficult to stop. Each biscuit is small enough to eat in one bite, which makes the bag disappear even faster.

The maker and its unusual method

Kochi-based Nomura Senmame Kako-ten was founded in 1923 and began producing this style of biscuit in the 1950s. The basic biscuit dough is supplied by Mitsuya Confectionery in Nagoya, but Kochi’s version becomes distinctive during frying. The biscuits are cooked in oil also used for the company’s seasoned bean snacks, giving them a faint savory depth that baked biscuits do not have.

Why the flavor is so memorable

After frying, the biscuits are seasoned with naturally sun-dried salt. The sweet dough, fragrant oil, and sharp grains of salt create a simple but precise balance. The process is controlled by experienced makers, and small differences in frying and seasoning affect the final character. They are crisp without feeling hard and rich without becoming heavy.

Retro package and Kochi character

The familiar red-and-white package has a nostalgic Showa-era feeling. The mascot, Miret-chan, was designed by Takashi Yanase, the creator associated with Anpanman and with Kochi. This connection strengthens the snack’s local identity and makes the package enjoyable as a souvenir.

Many varieties

The classic sweet-and-salty version is the reference point, but numerous flavors have appeared. These include corn potage, ginger, black pepper, garlic, caramel, and a non-fried type. Ginger and black pepper work particularly well for adults and drinks, while corn potage and caramel appeal to people who prefer a rounder, more familiar snack flavor.

How to enjoy them

Pouring the biscuits into a bowl makes them easy to share at work or during a family tea break. Green tea, coffee, milk, and beer can all work because the snack sits between a sweet biscuit and a salty cracker. Comparing two or three flavors is more interesting than eating only one.

Why I recommend them

Millet Biscuits are inexpensive, light, and easy to carry, but they have a clear regional story. Their charm is not luxury; it is the confidence of a simple everyday snack perfected over many years. After receiving that first bag from my boss, I understood why people from Kochi speak of them with such affection.
