I personally enjoy Jaga Pokkuru, but at a Hokkaido fair in Tokyo I found a different snack that looked ideal for serving with drinks.

I hesitated between this product and the scallop soy-sauce butter flavor. As an enthusiastic lover of crab and shellfish, however, I ultimately chose the crab mayonnaise okaki.

The bag cost 500 yen.

The package prominently states that this is a Hokkaido-limited product.

Hokkaido okaki products have recently appeared quite often in convenience stores and supermarkets outside the island as well.
Perhaps Hokkaido-style rice crackers are experiencing a broader boom.

Trying Crab Mayonnaise Okaki

Small, rounded, bite-size rice crackers emerge from the bag, each covered generously with seasoning powder.

The moment one enters the mouth, the aroma of crab appears.
Then comes the gentle richness of mayonnaise. The powerful seasoning pairs exceptionally well with beer.

I was surprised that a packaged snack could taste so much like real crab.
The flavor is remarkably convincing.

It is easy to become addicted.

The seasoning is excellent, but the rice cracker itself is equally impressive.
Calling it merely crisp seems inadequate: the texture is extraordinarily light and crunchy. The underlying okaki is so good that it would probably taste wonderful with nothing more than salt.

Perhaps that quality comes from the flavor of the rice itself.

Next time, I definitely want to buy the scallop soy-sauce butter variety too.
Anyone receiving this as a Hokkaido souvenir is almost certain to be pleased.
