Hapi Marche Harajuku Berry: Strawberry Sweets from a Dedicated Farm

ハピマルシェ川島省吾店舗内

At a time when going out had become almost impossible, our sweet-loving household turned to online shopping to satisfy our cravings.

While searching for desserts made properly with Japanese-grown ingredients, I discovered a shop called Hapi Marche and wanted to introduce it here.

I would normally prefer to write a review after tasting the products, but that part will have to follow later.

Hapi Marche: A Pioneer of Farmers’ Markets Inside Train Stations

I began by searching for an online shop, but Hapi Marche also operates a physical store inside Ecute Tachikawa in Tokyo.

It apparently has an eat-in corner as well. However, quite apart from the period of self-restraint, I had no other business in Tachikawa, so I expected to order the products instead.

The following images are borrowed from the official website. The store is filled with strawberries and has a wonderfully cheerful atmosphere.

Hapi Marche Harajuku Berry

The sheer quantity of strawberries is remarkable.

Hapi Marche strawberry sandwich

The sandwiches also look delicious.

Hapi Marche whole strawberry sweet

The whole-strawberry item priced at ¥298 is extremely tempting.

Hapi Marche shaved strawberry dessert

The shaved-strawberry dessert looks stylish too. An introductory size costs ¥300, which leaves almost no reason not to try it.

All of these strawberry products are apparently supplied directly from the company’s own farm in Tochigi Prefecture.

What is Hapi Marche’s Harajuku Berry?

The name Harajuku may make you imagine Tokyo’s famous fashion district, but this Harajuku is actually a place in Tsuga, Tochigi City. It is a wonderfully catchy place name.

The farm named and sells the strawberries grown in the area where it began as “Harajuku Berry.”

The company explains its approach as follows:

“Fully ripe strawberries picked in the morning and shipped directly”

Only fully ripe strawberries are harvested during the cool early-morning hours. After being thoroughly chilled, they are shipped the same day, allowing customers to enjoy the flavor of freshly picked fruit.

At the sister shop Hapi Marche in Tachikawa Station, Tokyo, many customers tell us, “They are completely different from strawberries sold elsewhere!” and “They are delicious!”

“Frequent quality checks”

Sugar content and eating quality are checked carefully with every harvest. The results are fed back into cultivation practices to produce even more delicious strawberries.

“Use of organic enzymes”

By preventing disease and pests while reducing pesticide use, the farm grows strawberries with better flavor and a satisfying, substantial texture.

“Particular care from the seedling stage”

Strawberry farms often buy seedlings and raise them. At Berry Good Farm, we aim to reduce pesticides and fertilizer and carefully cultivate the plants ourselves from the seedling stage.

The limited-time items had already sold out, but the following product was added during the stay-at-home period:

The product I most wanted was the Strawberry Flower Gelato. Eight cups cost roughly ¥4,800, or about ¥600 each, making it a fairly luxurious treat.

Still, because we had stopped going out altogether, I decided it was reasonable to spend a little more on food and planned to order it.
