I sometimes feel embarrassed giving flashy, newly imported sweets as souvenirs, so I prefer simple confections with the atmosphere of the Showa era. Surely I am not alone. The products are not only cute. Minatoya’s age-mochi won a gold prize at the 20th National Confectionery Exposition. Both salt and soy-sauce versions are worth trying.

I have taken these crackers to many people as casual gifts. Their reactions repeat my own first experience: they become fans, and those close enough to Monzen-Nakacho often visit the shop themselves. Senbei feels friendly rather than formal, making it easy both to give and receive. It can be opened immediately and shared with everyone—which, as a Minatoya fan, is secretly one reason I like bringing it.

With a budget slightly above ¥1,000, you can buy several varieties for a large gathering without worrying too much about headcount. The logo carries plenty of downtown style, and the gift is unlikely to duplicate someone else’s choice.
