Kuze Fuku Shoten carries many appetizing seasonings and specialty foods. At its Tokyo Solamachi store, visitors can also purchase original imo kenpi—crisp, fried strips of sweet potato—in several flavors.

My recommendation is the nori-shio, or seaweed-and-salt, flavor. Imo kenpi is fried in oil, so it shares some familiar qualities with French fries and can be approachable even for international visitors who have never tried this traditional Japanese snack. The natural sweetness of the sweet potato combines with salt and the aroma of seaweed, producing a deeply satisfying sweet-savory balance.

Small portions of roughly sixty grams were available when I visited, making it easy to sample without committing to a large package. Other choices included apple and plain. Buying every flavor and comparing them little by little would be an enjoyable way to share the souvenir with family or friends.

When I made my purchase, the staff member said, “I will put in a little extra for you.” Although Solamachi is a modern shopping complex beneath Tokyo Skytree, that warm, old-downtown style of service made me especially happy. The bag truly did contain a generous amount.

The store also sold products such as doughnuts made with tofu, so there was plenty to explore beyond the imo kenpi. Still, the nori-shio sweet potato snack is the item that stayed in my memory. Its crisp texture and combination of sweetness, salt and seaweed make it difficult to stop eating.
