Original Toukibi White Chocolate by Snow Bell: An Addictive Combination of Unique Texture and Luxurious Coating

Hokkaido has more delicious souvenirs than anyone could count. Since I live in Tokyo, however, I cannot visit the island frequently.

Fortunately, the strength of the Hokkaido brand means that dedicated product fairs are regularly held in Tokyo.

I had long been curious about a sweet called Toukibi Chocolate and bought this package to discover what it was like.

Toukibi is the Hokkaido word for corn. The package also calls this the original product, and Snow Bell’s version does indeed seem to be widely recognized as the confection that created the category.

A large ear of corn dominates the package. The design is filled with tempting phrases: Hokkaido limited, original, toukibi, and white chocolate. Rather than an expensive formal gift box, it has a bright, casual appearance. It seems designed to be opened and eaten freely.

The words Since 1985 reveal a history of a little over thirty years. That makes the product two years younger than I am. Despite the established sound of the category name Toukibi Chocolate, it is not quite as ancient as I had imagined.

A bag of ten cost 324 yen, placing it firmly in the affordable range.
I have a vague feeling that it may have cost slightly more, but unfortunately I did not keep an exact note.

Opening the outer bag reveals individually wrapped bars. That is convenient because there is no need to finish them all immediately. As I often note in other reviews, the printed individual wrappers also make the product easy to identify when pieces are distributed around an office.

I bought a bag containing ten bars, while boxed versions of sixteen and twenty-eight are apparently available. You can choose the format to suit the occasion.

Matcha and milk-chocolate varieties are also sold. If the white-chocolate version proves popular, the other flavors provide alternatives for a future souvenir.

Tasting Original Toukibi White Chocolate

Removing the wrapper reveals a bar completely coated in white chocolate.

Corn puffs and almonds are bound together beneath that coating.

The white chocolate penetrates properly into the center. It is not merely a decorative layer on the surface.

The texture is genuinely distinctive. Anyone accustomed to standard chocolate crunch or a hard chocolate bar may initially think that it feels unexpectedly different. Yet the flavor that follows is unquestionably delicious.

For people from Hokkaido, it may be a nostalgic taste. To me, both the flavor and texture felt entirely new.

Other manufacturers also sell products called toukibi chocolate, but when possible, why not begin with the original? Online reviews are consistently favorable, so this is an easy product to try with confidence.

Limiting yourself to one bar per day is difficult, so purchase it with appropriate determination.
