Natto may be Ibaraki’s best-known specialty and dominates its souvenir shops, but refrigeration makes it less convenient as a gift. New specialties are gradually appearing, yet historic sweets also remain. Yoshiwara Denchu dates back to the Edo period. I had seen it in travel magazines but never bought it until finding it at Pasar Moriya.
Yoshiwara Denchu by Kamejirushi
The package shows Nariaki Tokugawa, ninth lord of the Mito Domain, in a modern historical-game style. The sweet was reportedly created inside the palace by a lady-in-waiting named Yoshiwara, explaining its name; I had assumed it referred to Asakusa’s Yoshiwara.
The best-before date was about two weeks from purchase. Each bar contains 78 kcal.
Every piece is wrapped in subdued traditional paper bearing the name, convenient for sharing.
My impressions after tasting Yoshiwara Denchu
I was surprised by the edible oblaat film.
It prevents crumbs and makes eating easy. Mellow kinako, chewy starch syrup, and light crisp rice puffs create a gentle lingering sweetness. It resembles Saitama’s Gokabo, though Yoshiwara Denchu seems lighter on kinako and richer in puffs, giving a cleaner finish (^^) This historic Mito sweet was delicious. Thank you for the treat (*^^*)
The combination of kinako, syrup, and puffed rice also makes the sweet feel strongly connected to traditional Japanese confectionery. It is neither heavy nor intensely sugary, so it pairs naturally with green tea. The edible film may look unusual at first, but it performs a practical role by holding the delicate soybean flour and crumbs together. Individually wrapped bars are easy to carry and share, and the historical story gives recipients something interesting to discuss. For visitors seeking an Ibaraki souvenir other than natto, Yoshiwara Denchu is a convincing choice with both regional identity and a long tradition.
