The package shows Owakudani, Mount Fuji, and photographs of the black egg manju. Curiously, the product name is simply “Hakone Black Egg” and does not say that it is a manju confection, which is a little confusing.
Hakone is famous for the black eggs of Owakudani.
The eggs, boiled black by sulfur, are probably eaten by nearly everyone who visits Owakudani.
They are delicious and tempting to take home, but because they are boiled eggs, they do not keep for very long.
At such times, how about these manju modeled after black eggs?
Hakone Black Egg (Nagotoya)
The six-piece box is just the right amount for one family.
A larger box of 11 pieces for ¥1,080 also appears to be available.

The best-before date is printed on the side, but I forgot to photograph it.
If I remember correctly, it was about one month.

Opening the box surprised me.
It looks exactly like a supermarket egg carton. What a fun idea!

Inside are manju that closely resemble black eggs in size, color, and shape.
How Does Hakone Black Egg Manju Taste?
The surface is coated in chocolate and has a beautiful glossy shine.

From the outside inward, there are three layers: chocolate, manju dough, and egg-yolk bean paste.
The moist dough and rich yolk paste feel smooth on the palate. Blended with the chocolate, they become wonderfully mellow.
Although it is a manju and might seem like a Japanese sweet, the clear presence of chocolate gives it something of a Western-style character.
It should pair with both green tea and coffee.
The realistic black egg manju arranged in an egg carton make a powerful impression.
They are not individually wrapped, but each manju rests on a thin sheet of paper.
In summer, I would be slightly concerned about the chocolate coating melting.
When sharing them at an office, serve each one with its paper on a plate or tissue.
The appearance is striking and the flavor is excellent.
This is an ideal Hakone souvenir!
