A refreshing and delicious salted manju

During a trip to Hakone, I bought Hakone thin-skin salt manju as a souvenir for my family and coworkers. Because I needed to distribute the gift among many people, I was looking for a reasonably priced box with a generous number of pieces.
I also wanted something that would suit different preferences. Rather than choosing an unusual novelty, I selected a familiar manju with a regional salt-sweet character.
The recipients said it was delicious, which was a relief. I had also wondered whether an international colleague would enjoy traditional bean-filled confectionery, but the unfamiliar style actually made the gift interesting, and the response was positive.
I purchased a box for myself as well. The first impression was gentle sweetness followed by a fairly clear salty note. It was not a flavor I ate often, yet it resembled the modern category of “salt sweets,” where salt sharpens and refreshes the sweetness rather than simply making the product savory.
The thin outer skin keeps the sweet from feeling too heavy, while the contrast between filling and salt gives each small piece more character than an ordinary manju. I think it would pair especially well with strong, slightly bitter green tea.
Very young children may not respond as enthusiastically to the noticeable saltiness. My impression is that adults and older recipients are more likely to appreciate the restrained, refreshing balance.
Current piece counts, prices and ingredients should be checked at the shop, particularly when buying for a large group. For my needs, however, the combination of quantity and cost was excellent.
Most importantly, I personally became fond of the flavor. The next time I visit Hakone, I will probably purchase it again—not only for others, but also for myself. It is a practical group souvenir that still carries a distinctive taste of the destination.
