Here is an introduction to one of Aomori’s best-known sweets. Apples are probably the first thing that comes to mind when people think of Aomori, and apple products fill the prefecture’s souvenir shops. You could almost say that apples are everywhere.
Even among all those choices, “Kininaru Ringo” stands out by delivering in appearance, flavor, and sheer satisfaction. Add the memorable impact of its name and perhaps it deserves praise on four counts rather than three.
If samples are available in the shop, choosing is easy. If the boxes are simply lined up on the shelf, however, the product truly lives up to its Japanese name: it becomes an apple you cannot stop wondering about.
I will introduce it mainly through photographs, so I hope they help you decide.
Kininaru Ringo (Ragueneau Sasaki)

It comes in a square box small enough to hold in one hand, but the box has a surprisingly solid weight.
The price was 864 yen.
The wrapping paper is covered with apple illustrations.

The best-before date is printed on the back. It keeps for about 45 days.

The realistic apple illustration on the inner box is stylish as well.

The sweet is wrapped in brown paper and then sealed inside a plastic bag.

At last, an impressive pie containing an entire apple appears.

The pastry is very thin—it is almost all apple!

What Does Kininaru Ringo Taste Like?
I cut it into smaller pieces to make it easier to eat.
The apple, soaked in sweet syrup, remains wonderfully juicy and retains a lively, crisp bite.
Around it is a thin pastry crust carrying a distinct buttery flavor.
At the center, syrup-soaked sponge and an apple filling gently bind all the elements together, giving the entire sweet a smooth unity.

Can you see it? The apple actually still has its skin. That adds another excellent accent to the texture.

Cutting it into small pieces like this makes it easy for everyone to share. 🙂
Although the idea is simple, the flavor and texture feel meticulously calculated, and the overall execution is excellent.
Because it uses an entire apple, it is a substantial dessert. Yet the refreshing fruitiness meant I could easily finish it by myself. 🙂
Kininaru Ringo brings out the apple’s sweetness and juiciness to their fullest. It can also be ordered online, and after tasting it, I understand why it has fans throughout Japan.
I highly recommend it as an Aomori souvenir. 🙂
Thank you for the treat.
