Gohei Mochi by Kitagawa Shoten: A Beloved Aomori Snack with Sweet Rice, Soybean Oil, and Miso

ごへい餅アップ

Following the Original Dakekimi Donut, here is another Aomori local food. Apples and garlic are so famous that other specialties receive less attention, but gohei mochi remains a popular hometown snack. Many people name it when recalling nostalgic Aomori treats. I bought this one at Umi no Eki in coastal Ajigasawa. Its short shelf life limits its use as a souvenir, yet the affordable price and irresistible flavor make it worth trying whenever you find it.

Gohei Mochi by Kitagawa Shoten

It cost about ¥120; unfortunately I lost my note. Whole Gohei Mochi I have seen it at other Aomori souvenir shops and supermarkets, so there are many chances to encounter it ^_^ Close-up of Gohei Mochi Made with 100% Aomori rice, it is wrapped and taped in a clear bag bearing the Kitagawa Shoten name. The plain package gives it a wonderful handmade feeling. As a child I loved this lollipop-like sweet on a stick and often asked for one. Back of Gohei Mochi package The back calls it “Gohee Mochi.” It must be eaten the same day and uses non-glutinous rice flour from Aomori. Kitagawa Shoten’s address is in Ajigasawa; although sold around the prefecture, this product is made there.

How does Kitagawa Shoten Gohei Mochi taste?

Unwrapped Gohei Mochi Its surface shines with oil. Let’s taste it. Cross-section of Gohei Mochi The sticky, resilient texture comes from non-glutinous rice. Gently sweet, fragrant mochi is coated in mellow miso, and the combination of soybean oil and miso is truly delicious. Every bite makes me feel I have returned to Aomori. I love it enough to buy many, but its fresh-sweet shelf life is too short to share easily with friends. I hope this wonderful gohei mochi becomes known nationwide. Thank you for the treat! See more Aomori souvenir information below.

The simple appearance is part of the appeal. Nothing about the clear wrapping tries to make the snack look luxurious; instead, it feels like a familiar food made for local people. The stick also makes it convenient to hold, while the glossy coating gives a clue to its rich miso-and-oil seasoning. The contrast between gentle rice sweetness, savory miso, and resilient texture is what makes it memorable. Travelers who can eat it promptly should not overlook it merely because it cannot be stored for long.
