Ariake Yokohama Harbor Double Marron: Retro Packaging and Rich, Creamy Chestnut Filling Bring Pure Happiness

ありあけ横濱ハーバーダブルマロン5個

Many people in Japan have probably heard the famous advertising jingle for Ariake Harbor at least once.

Ariake Harbor is certainly well known.
Yet until this review, I had never eaten one!

I learned that the sweet was created around sixty years ago and has a long history.

It is a Yokohama specialty, but I happened to find it at Kawaguchi Parking Area in Saitama Prefecture, so I bought a box.

Ariake Yokohama Harbor Double Marron

Ariake Yokohama Harbor package

The retro illustration shows people aboard a ship, waving as they hold paper streamers.

The navy-blue box looks understated, yet somehow has an unmistakable presence on the shelf.

A box of five costs 891 yen.
The best-before period is 60 days from manufacture.

Looking inside the Ariake Yokohama Harbor box

Five cakes are arranged vertically inside.

The individual wrappers carry the same illustration as the outer box.

You cannot tell from a photograph, but the wrapper has a matte texture and feels like a slightly premium material. It is an excellent presentation when handing the cakes out one at a time.

The best-before date and ingredients are also printed on every wrapper, making the cakes especially convenient to distribute.

Each piece feels as satisfyingly heavy as a Japanese sweet-potato cake.

The surface has an attractive glossy sheen.

What Does Ariake Yokohama Harbor Double Marron Taste Like?

Let us try it.

Inside the extremely moist outer cake is an even smoother, creamier chestnut filling.

It contains so much butter that my fingers were left shining with richness.

You can clearly feel small pieces of chestnut in the filling.
The luxurious marron aroma is also pronounced.
For comparison, it reminds me slightly of Mamador, another popular Japanese confection.

Because this baked sweet is unusually moist and almost juicy, it glides down smoothly enough that you scarcely need a drink.

Of course, it pairs beautifully with coffee, black tea, or green tea.

Personally, however, I think cold milk is the very best match.

Other varieties, including a chocolate flavor, are apparently available, and I will buy one if I find it.

This was my first Ariake Harbor, yet I instantly became a devoted fan.

It is popular enough to appear in virtually every Yokohama souvenir shop, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Thank you for the treat!
