Ogino Pan, a bakery located in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, is well-known among anpan (sweet bean bun) enthusiasts. It’s so popular that some people come from afar just to buy from them, and their headquarters’ factory outlet is even included in bus tour itineraries.
I received their signature product, the Tanzawa Anpan, as a souvenir. It lived up to its delicious reputation, so I’d like to give a brief review.
Tanzawa Anpan (Ogino Pan)
I had someone pick it up for me on a bus tour. The bag ended up a bit crumpled.
Three types: koshi (smooth), tsubu (chunky), and shiro (white bean).
Each one is 140 yen—a standard price, like you’d find in the Japanese sweets section of a supermarket.
Impression after trying the Tanzawa Anpan tsubu.
The expiration date is four days from the purchase date. It lasts relatively well, so it seems great as a gift.
The surface is glossy.
The bread is thin, with a generous amount of bean paste. The sweetness is mild, giving it a light, refined taste.
The bean paste has a smooth texture, and the gentle saltiness of the bread enhances the flavor of the filling. The bean paste is incredibly delicious!
It’s more like bean paste with a touch of bread rather than bread with filling, offering a satisfying volume. This balance is likely due to the subtle sweetness.
Impression after trying the Tanzawa Anpan shiro:
I’ll try the white bean paste as well.
Poppy seeds are sprinkled on the surface of the white bean paste bun.
The white bean paste is also very smooth and creamy, with a refined sweetness that makes it easy to eat more than one!
It’s definitely worth the trip to buy these.
By the way, it seems they have several store locations.
They’re available within Kanagawa Prefecture, around Sagamihara, Atsugi, and Yokohama.
I can definitely see why they’re so popular. Next time, I’d love to try some of their other breads! I might as well visit their main factory outlet, too. It was delicious—thank you!
