Tsukisugata: Akagi Mountain-and-Moon Packaging with Fluffy Cake and Custard Everyone Will Enjoy

I found this at Takasaka Service Area on the Kan-Etsu Expressway, where the souvenir section was particularly appealing.

It was prominently featured in the store, so I felt I had to try one. There were many other souvenirs I wanted and choosing was difficult, but fortunately Tsukisugata was also sold individually, allowing me to begin with just one.

Selling sweets by the piece is genuinely helpful, even if a single piece sometimes costs a little more. It is perfect when you want to taste something yourself before buying a full box, or when you want to add one small extra treat for a few people. In this case, the individually sold Tsukisugata was not marked up at all. Wonderful!

Boxed versions are naturally available as well, so if you are presenting the sweets formally to someone, the box would be the better choice.

Tsukisugata

The illustration of Mount Akagi in Gunma Prefecture beneath the moon is striking, and the bold color scheme gives the packaging considerable impact.

A box of six cost 780 yen and a box of ten cost 1,300 yen. Individual pieces were also available for 130 yen each.

Each individual wrapper is printed with the same illustration used on the paper wrapping around the box.

The best-before date is printed on every individual piece.
It keeps for about one month.

Inside the printed wrapper, the cake is further protected by a plastic film.

Its appearance is quite similar to Hagi no Tsuki, the famous sweet from Sendai.

Custard cream fills the center.
The cake is moist, fluffy, and very finely textured.

The cream is smooth and mellow, with a clear richness from the eggs. It is delicious.

The overall character is certainly similar to Hagi no Tsuki, although personally I might give Hagi no Tsuki the edge for its cream. I remember that cream being somewhat richer.
Of course, that comes down to personal preference. 🙂

Even so, the individual wrapper has an attractive design, and the approachable flavor is likely to please almost anyone. That also makes Tsukisugata easy to hand out as a souvenir.
