Niigata offers many sweet souvenirs, but some families include people who cannot or prefer not to eat sweets. This savory Kashimaya assortment is an excellent alternative and pairs beautifully with both rice and drinks.
Kashimaya Sablefish and Salmon Trout Fillet Assortment
Kashimaya’s main store is in Niigata, although I bought this at Takashimaya in Tokyo. Its sturdy paper bag made a strong impression, and because the contents are perishable, the staff naturally included an ice pack.

The box design is elegant.

The assortment contains four fillets.

An enclosed note explains that sablefish can sometimes break apart or develop harmless jelly-like areas while heating. This phenomenon is called jelly meat, and the clear explanation is thoughtful.
Sake-Lees-Marinated Sablefish and Salted Salmon Trout

The sablefish costs ¥864 per fillet and the salted salmon trout ¥594. I lightly wiped the sake lees from the sablefish before grilling it. Its aroma was exceptionally fragrant, while the fatty fish tasted sweet and separated so tenderly that it seemed to melt in the mouth. It felt like food from a fine Japanese restaurant, and the first bite genuinely surprised me. The salmon trout was also tender and delicious without being overly salty, immediately making me want white rice. The sablefish is expensive, but its flavor was moving enough that I strongly recommend it. Store below 5°C and eat within eight days, making this best suited to yourself or close family.
