Rice is central to everyday eating in Japan, appearing in dishes such as donburi and sushi. A shamoji, or rice paddle, is the utensil traditionally used to serve cooked rice. Plastic paddles that keep grains from sticking are now widespread, but wooden paddles were once much more common.
I have heard that Miyajima was Japan’s leading production area for wooden rice paddles. That history makes the shamoji a natural souvenir: it is a practical object closely associated with rice and with Japanese food culture.
Many kinds of paddles are still sold throughout Miyajima. I particularly recommend those decorated with written characters. Depending on the shop, customers may even be able to choose a favorite word or personal wish and have it written on the paddle at the time of purchase.
Sizes vary enormously. There are tiny versions that become phone straps or key charms, ordinary kitchen utensils, and oversized paddles nearly as tall as an adult. This range lets buyers choose something practical, decorative or humorous according to the recipient.
In my own kitchen I use a plastic paddle because rice grains do not stick to it easily. Nevertheless, I often display wooden Miyajima paddles at home as charms for safe childbirth or success in school entrance examinations, and I also give them to friends for those purposes.
That decorative meaning makes the souvenir accessible even to international visitors who do not normally serve rice with a shamoji. By writing a favorite phrase, a name or a personal wish on it and displaying it at home, the recipient can enjoy a small but meaningful piece of Japanese culture.
A Miyajima rice paddle is therefore more than a kitchen tool. It can be a craft object, a personalized memento and a good-luck charm connected to one of Japan’s best-known sacred islands.
