My impression of Ayumi’s sata andagi

A classic Okinawan souvenir everyone enjoys

Sata andagi is a popular Okinawan fried confection, often described as an Okinawan doughnut. “Sata” means sugar and “andagi” refers to something fried in oil. You see it everywhere, from supermarkets to souvenir shops. The traditional form is round, although slender bite-sized varieties also exist.
Because it contains plenty of sugar and has a dense crumb, one piece is very filling. People who avoid sweets or are dieting may need some restraint. I do not usually have a strong sweet tooth myself, but sata andagi became an exception after I tried the version from Ayumi, a shop on the second floor of Makishi Public Market.
Located behind Kokusai Street, Makishi Public Market is a sightseeing destination in its own right and is always busy with shoppers and diners. Ayumi stood out because it regularly had a line. When I visited after lunchtime, the sweets were sometimes already sold out, making them surprisingly difficult to obtain. On one trip I finally queued before opening and succeeded.
I bought one piece, sat on a bench and tasted it immediately. Despite being fried, it did not feel oily. The inside was moist, and the sweetness was never cloying. It paired perfectly with the tart shikuwasa juice I was carrying.
Convinced that it would make a good souvenir, I bought three bags containing nine pieces each. A bag cost less than 800 yen at the time, and the large size of the sweets made the value excellent. Each order came in a yellow bag. They added a little bulk to my luggage, but everyone was delighted when I distributed them at home.
They also kept for around two weeks at room temperature, so I did not need to rush to deliver every bag immediately. Current prices, quantities and shelf life should always be checked at purchase. For flavor, generosity and unmistakable Okinawan character, Ayumi’s sata andagi is worth the early visit.
