When people think of sightseeing on Okinawa’s main island, Kokusai Street is difficult to leave out. To reach it, take the Okinawa Urban Monorail, Yui Rail, toward Shuri and get off at Makishi Station. After leaving the ticket gates, head left and descend the escalator to arrive near the beginning of the famous shopping street.
Chinsuko is loved by visitors and residents alike. In recent years an impressive number of flavors have appeared, and the confection is purchased by international travelers as well as Japanese tourists.
Snow-salt chinsuko may be the best-known variation, but my recommendation is matcha. The traditional cookie has a crisp surface and a delicate, crumbly texture that almost melts as you chew. A generous coating of concentrated matcha powder adds fragrance and gentle bitterness, balancing the richness of the dough.
That contrast is surprisingly addictive. The pieces look modest, but it becomes difficult to stop after opening the package. I discovered this flavor on my latest Okinawa trip and bought it immediately. A box cost around 300 yen at the time, so my friends and I were able to purchase several without hesitation.
An Okinawan friend joked that there could not be an Okinawan resident who dislikes chinsuko. Whether or not that is literally true, the sweet’s long familiarity and portable form explain why it remains such a dependable souvenir.
Matcha also gives the product a second layer of Japanese character, joining an Okinawan confection with a flavor associated with tea culture. It works especially well with unsweetened tea or coffee, and the affordable box is convenient for casual gifts.
Prices and available flavors may change, but browsing the growing selection is part of the fun. I look forward to seeing what new chinsuko combinations appear next, while matcha has already earned a place among the varieties I would buy again.
