Okayama’s famous kibidango
The Seto Inland Sea region is home to many legends, and the tale of Momotaro is among the most famous. Okayama is often described as the birthplace of the Momotaro story, so kibidango has long been strongly associated with souvenirs from the prefecture.
Kibidango is made by kneading glutinous rice with starch syrup and sugar, then adding millet for flavor. The result is a soft, easy-to-eat mochi confection. Many companies make it, but Koeidou’s individually wrapped kibidango is especially popular as a gift because of its delightful packaging.
The illustrations were designed by picture-book artist Taro Gomi. The ogre, Momotaro, dog, monkey and pheasant look as though they have stepped out of a storybook, and children particularly enjoy them. Alongside the original kibidango, flavors have included peach, matcha, sea salt, kinako and brown rice.
I bought mine from a shop inside Okayama Station.
Traditional, comforting kibidango

I would like to introduce one of my favorite Okayama specialties. The gentle sweetness and chewy texture, unchanged in spirit for generations, spread pleasantly through the mouth. Each piece is bite-sized, making it ideal with tea or as a small snack when you are hungry.
I enjoyed it so much on one visit that I bought ten boxes at once to take home. It is a confection that can please children and senior family members alike. Momotaro and his companions—the dog, pheasant and monkey—are drawn so charmingly on the box that the package itself always lifts my mood.
I enjoy kibidango with ordinary Japanese tea, and I especially like pairing it with matcha. Many shops produce their own versions, and each has its own appeal. Choosing kibidango at Okayama Station has become one of the pleasures of every trip. Many of my friends like it too, so it is always warmly received as a souvenir. Its simple flavor never becomes tiring, which is why it is so easy to eat more pieces than planned. I hope to keep enjoying Okayama kibidango for years to come.
