Have you visited Kushimoto and Cape Shionomisaki, the southernmost point of Honshu? Hidden there is Momijiya, a celebrated yokan maker known mainly to those who seek it out.
I first visited several years ago after hearing that Cape Shionomisaki had an excellent yokan shop. As a devoted fan of Japanese sweets, I immediately drove there.
Momijiya’s Handmade Yokan
The building looked less like a shop or factory than a private mansion. My child and I hesitantly rang the bell. A man appeared dressed as though he had stepped directly out of production: hair cover, rubber gloves, full apron, and white boots. When I awkwardly explained that I had heard yokan could be purchased there, he invited us inside.
Beyond the door was a large, elegant reception room with elaborate furnishings. Our confusion only grew when a gracious woman appeared and served tea. She told us she would cut some yokan and disappeared into the back.
While I tried to settle my child, who could not comfortably drink the hot tea, we waited. She returned with several colorful varieties, two slices of each, arranged beautifully on a plate. Despite feeling almost like private guests rather than customers, we happily ate every piece.
The selection included traditional honneri yokan, salt, cherry blossom, matcha, yuzu, and white kidney bean. More unusual varieties included charcoal and soy sauce. Some may no longer be produced, while others may change seasonally.
A defining feature is the delicate crystallized surface, similar to famous Ogi yokan. This crisp sugar layer can only be created through traditional handcrafting. The finished bars are dried for a full week before the texture develops. Achieving that without additives must require careful control of temperature and humidity. Momijiya has won the Monde Selection multiple times, and its refined flavor bears little resemblance to inexpensive mass-produced yokan.
After tasting it, buying several bars was unavoidable. Handmade production means the shelf life is not exceptionally long, and although the price is fair for the quality, I limited myself to three. They disappeared within two or three days, and I immediately regretted not buying more. Fortunately, the product can now be ordered online.
Combine a Momijiya Visit with Local Sightseeing
Cape Shionomisaki feels distant even from Osaka, but highway access has gradually improved. Nearby Oshima offers several small but fascinating historical sites. The Turkish Memorial Museum and monument commemorate the friendship born from the rescue of sailors from a wrecked Ottoman vessel. The Japan–US Friendship Museum focuses on the Lady Washington, a merchant ship said to have reached Japan long before Perry’s Black Ships. Kashinozaki also has Japan’s first full-scale modern lighthouse, built in 1870.
Local fishing ports serve affordable abalone in summer and spiny lobster in winter. The entire area rewards a leisurely visit.
If you travel to Kushimoto, Shionomisaki, or Oshima, Momijiya yokan deserves a place among your souvenirs. The old saying claims that famous regional products are rarely delicious, but this is no ordinary tourist sweet. It is a gift recipients can sincerely praise after eating. Fans of the crystallized Ogi-yokan style will especially appreciate it and may want to try every flavor.
The story behind the recipe adds still more meaning. Production had once ceased and the formula was forgotten. The current president reportedly discovered an earlier generation’s recipe in the family Buddhist altar and devoted years to restoring it, even leaving another career to pursue the revival.
Because of that determination across two generations, visitors can again enjoy this remarkable confection. The yokan seems to reflect the warmth associated with Kushimoto itself—the same community remembered for sharing scarce food and caring devotedly for shipwrecked Turkish sailors.
For a handcrafted souvenir with flavor, history, and a genuine sense of place, Momijiya’s yokan is difficult to surpass.
