Original Ripe Midi Tomato Jelly: Okayama’s Fruity Whole-Tomato Dessert

This tomato jelly suddenly became known nationwide after it was featured in 2008 on the television program “Shin Kuwa-zugirai Ou Ketteisen.”

A large Momotaro tomato grown in Okayama Prefecture is placed whole inside each serving of jelly. The surrounding jelly is made from a puree of ripe midi tomatoes grown in Ushimado, so the dessert lets you experience tomato flavor in an unusually generous and luxurious way.

The aroma and taste of a Momotaro tomato are quite different from those of an ordinary cooking tomato, and first-time tasters may be surprised. Rather than tasting like a conventional vegetable, it is sweet, juicy, and fruity enough to feel like a dessert ingredient.

Many shops now sell tomato jelly, but the version regarded as the original is the Ripe Tomato Jelly made by Sunami Seizosho. It can be purchased inside Okayama Station, making it easy to pick up just before boarding the Shinkansen. The unexpected combination, vivid appearance, and distinctly local ingredients make it a memorable Okayama souvenir for anyone who enjoys fruit jellies or unusual regional sweets.
