This is a product I purchased at the roadside station “Fuwari Shibayama” after visiting the Shibayama Kofun and Haniwa Museum in Shibayama Town, Chiba Prefecture.
Shibayama Town is famous for its ancient burial mounds and haniwa figurines, and as you drive through the area, you can spot haniwa lining the roadsides.
After spending the entire day surrounded by haniwa, I started wanting a related souvenir. However, buying a haniwa figurine seemed like a recipe for it to gather dust in the corner of the house, so I opted for a cute snack featuring the town’s mascot instead.
Shibakko-kun Peanut Butter Sable (Fuwari Shibayama Co., Ltd.)
10 pieces for 648 yen.
The package states that it’s exclusive to both “Sora no Eki Fuwari Shibayama” and “Michi no Eki Fuwari Shibayama.”
The packaging features Shibakko-kun, the mascot of Shibayama Town—a character fitting for the town known for haniwa figurines. ^_^
While actual haniwa have a distinct, somewhat intimidating presence that can be hard for small children to approach…
Shibakko-kun is absolutely adorable. ^_^
Since we had just visited the Haniwa Museum and were in full haniwa mode, I didn’t hesitate for a second when I spotted the Shibakko-kun Sable—I added it straight to the basket.
The expiration date is printed on the bottom. It’s about four months from the purchase date.
This is how it opens.
There’s Shibakko-kun on the side too! So cute.
The sables are arranged vertically inside.
The individual packaging features a map of Chiba Prefecture and the Yamasu logo. It’s a simple design without Shibakko-kun.
When I opened it, I was surprised!
Shibakko-kun is printed on the sable!
And it’s in color with a beautifully detailed finish!
The kids were delighted to see it.
Here’s the size.
The sable’s fine texture allows Shibakko-kun’s illustration to be printed with great clarity. Even up close, it looks this beautiful.
My Thoughts on Tasting Shibakko-kun Peanut Butter Sable
Alright, let’s dig in!
The thin sable has a crispy texture with a toasty flavor.
The richness of the peanut butter and the milkiness of the dough spread gently, making it absolutely delicious. ^_^
The size of each piece is just right for when you want a small snack.
It’s also great that it uses peanuts, keeping with Chiba’s local specialty.
With its cute appearance and delicious taste, it’s perfect as a snack for kids!
If you visit Shibayama, the town of haniwa, this is definitely the souvenir to get.
If Shibakko-kun had been printed on the individual wrappers, it would have been even better as a gift to share.
Thank you for the treat.
