I recently learned that the birthplace of Japanese dairy farming is in Minamiboso, Chiba Prefecture.
I noticed this because there were many products and slogans referencing this at the roadside station “Michi no Eki Miyoshimura Hina no Sato.” While there may be various theories, hearing this made me want to try something related.
I tried the milk castella, which is said to be the No. 1 popular original product at Michi no Eki Miyoshimura, so I’d like to share my review.
Chiba Prefecture already has such a rich variety of products—pears, peanuts, spiny lobster, loquats, soy sauce—and now dairy products too! It’s clear from the souvenirs that even within Chiba, there are so many different aspects to discover.
Minamiboso Miyoshi Milk Castella from the Birthplace of Japanese Dairy Farming (Chiba Minamiboso)
6 slices for 500 yen.
There was even a poster in the shop saying it’s their most popular item. ^ ^
It’s made with milk from Miyoshi.
This is the half-size, but they also had a larger size available. I believe the larger size was double the size and price.
It’s nice that the label clearly includes “Hina no Sato.”
There are only a few ingredients, giving it a sense of simplicity without unnecessary additives.
The expiration date is printed on the back, about two months from the purchase date.
The castella is pre-sliced. No knife needed, which is nice. ^ ^
Having it pre-cut is a great feature for sharing at work, and it avoids the hassle of the knife sticking to the cake.
Gently peel off the plastic on the surface.
The crust has a dark color.
My Thoughts on Tasting the Miyoshi Milk Castella! How Does It Taste, and How Satisfying Is It?
Let’s dig in.
The texture is fluffy. It has less of the typical moistness of castella, giving it a light, sponge cake-like feel.
It’s not overly sweet, with a refined taste that brings out the smoothness of Miyoshi milk.
At first bite, it may seem like a simple, unassuming castella without any standout features. However, the milky aftertaste is distinctive—it follows through after each bite.
It was perfect with a glass of milk! Castella and milk really are a match made in heaven… ^ ^
They were also selling Miyoshi milk at the roadside station, and I regret not buying it.
It was delicious. Thank you for the treat!
